Cupids’ Language

Language of Love
French can be regarded as cupid’s favourite language. As a language it oozes love and romance and hence gives you an undue advantage while wooing your beloved. There is a wide variety of phrases available to you disposal to express the gamut of emotions that comes with the very term ‘love’. The extremely mushy “je t’aime” (I love you, but better), is matched by the masculine assertion “Je t’aime a la folie”- loosely translated in “I’m madly in love with you” and for the not so intense you have the likes of “je t’adore” (I adore you), “mon amour”, (my love), “mon grand amour” (my great love), “mon seul amour” (my only love), etc.
However there are certain hazards of the game here. Once I was dating a girl who asked me if I love her in French. Not too well conversant with the language of love back then I fumbled a “bien sur, je t’aime bien” to save the situation. However, it made matters worse as although it translates into “sure, I like you a lot”, the French mostly associate these kind of phrases while expressing their love for their puppies! So that was it for my puppy love. So be absolutely sure on what phrase to use where. A wrong phrase and all the romance might go down the drain!
One similar phrase “voulez-vous coucher avec moi”, like in the “Moulin Rouge” (do you want to sleep with me), when used on the wrong person this might yield not-so-pleasant consequences; to say the least! Apart from being an apt weapon for romantic conquests a dash of French can spice up your otherwise prosaic life or rekindle that old romance. A few je t’aimerai toujours” (I’ll always love you), “je serai toujours avec toi” (I’ll always be with you) can work wonders in those romantic starlight nights. When it comes to the romance of this language I can go on and on but these few are good enough for now to start with. If your partner is French then try using it on her and watch the magic a little bit of foreign accent can lend to your romance. It will surely add a certain “je ne sais quoi” to it!
Is French really the language of love?

    Hello all,

It is indeed the language of love, a bit like italian perhaps.

Unfortunately, from my experience I think it’s loosing importance in the world of translation don’t you think? Apart from literary translation of course.

But I agree that works wonders in the matters of heart!

    Best regards

Yes, it is but not the only one !
Hungarian has so much more synonyms for these, that with only 5-6 words, you can make an epic poem – at least, if you take in account that there are actually some 1.5 million words, and each word can have 10,000 (ten thousand) forms per word and even more significations.
So French is so poor in comparison with Hungarian – whatever one would like to say.
And who says that ? Well a Hungarian and Belgian secondary school French Language and Literature teacher :-)

@ Horváth-Militicsi Attila – Have you visited our Facebook Fanpage recently? Anthony Baldwin, who is a Portuguese translator has just mentioned that no language can beat Portuguese in terms of number of words or expressions available to express love and affection.

I am not sure if he is ready to believe that Hungarian is far beyond French…… What do you have to say?
